This super-rare Rolex has the perfect dial, hands and case and has the original 1984 punched-papers; box and service guarantee dated December 2008. The case has never been polished since it was sold 35 years ago in 1984 and the lugs retain their original satin finish and chamfers to the edges. The reference and serial numbers are perfectly engraved between the lugs and the it has the original insert which has a beautiful vivid Pepsi colour - there is a light scratch on the insert between 12 & 14 and a tiny mark by 18 but it is fine otherwise. The dial and hands are 100% perfect with lovely lemon yellow colour. The movement is the updated 3075 calibre and it has been serviced by Rolex in 2008 and again by us in October 2019. THE ROLEX 16750 PALLETTONI The Rolex GMT-Master ref. 16750 debuted in 1981 following the success of Rolex's longer-running production GMT reference 1675. The 16750 was in production for less than 8 years before manufacturing ceased around 1988. The ‘upgrade' from 1675 to 16750 featured 3 improvements, an all-new automatic calibre 3075 movement, a quickset date feature and an increased depth rating from 50 to 100 metres.
During its eight years of production, the Rolex GMT-Master 16750 had two distinct dial variations. The much rarer first generation, of which this is a beautiful example, displayed a matte black dial with tritium hour markers; it looked almost identical to the earlier reference 1675; these examples were named the ‘Pallettoni'. From about 1985 Rolex replaced the Pallettoni dial with a gloss dial and at the same time they encased the lume plots with circlets of white gold, a look more typically associated with today's modern iterations of the Rolex GMT. Not only were the earlier matt Pallettoni dials made in smaller numbers than the later gloss dials, but also when the Pallettoni watches went back to Rolex for servicing they were routinely replaced with the later gloss dials. The result is that most of the Pallettoni watches have replacement gloss dials, making the original matt dials rare beasts – especially when found in original condition and with the original paperwork
